Handy Boards

PCB icon

The Handy Board is a robotics controller intended for use in educational, hobbyist, and industrial robotics projects. The Handy Board uses the Motorola 6811 microprocessor, 32K of battery-protected RAM and circuitry to operate 4 DC motors. The board was created with our Douglas CAD/CAM Professional System software by Fred Martin of MIT.

Fred had Douglas build the original Handy Board prototypes, and has since authorized us to distribute handy boards from his design as part of our breadboard product line, which means that we now keep this board in stock, and can sell to experimenters right off the shelf, usually shipping the order the same day.

Handy Board products available from Douglas now include the Handy Board, the Interface/Charger Board, and the Expansion Board.

We sell only bare PCBs for the Handy Board and Interface/Charger Board. For the Expansion Board, we offer the bare board and also a kit. The kit includes the bare PCBs and the required parts. Information on the parts and assembly instructions are available:

  1. Handy Board Technical Reference and
  2. Handy Board Assembly Steps
from Fred's website in Adobe's PDF format. An Expansion Board Parts List and Expansion Board Assembly Notes pages are also available. If you don't wish to buy a kit, you can purchase the necessary parts to assemble these boards at local suppliers or from the large mail-order parts suppliers such as Digi-Key, Newark, and Mouser.

Pricing for the latest version of the Handy Boards is as follows:

Board Only Quantity
1 2 - 9 10 - 49 50 +
Handy Board $ 16 $ 12 ea. $ 10 ea. $ 8 ea.
Interface/Charger Board 8 6 ea. 5 ea. 4 ea.
Expansion Board 14 11 ea. 9 ea. 7 ea.

Kit (includes PCB) Quantity
1 2 - 9 10 - 49 50 +
Expansion Board Kit $ 28 24 ea. 21 ea. 18 ea.

You can order these items now from our Order Stock Items page.

You may wish to also check out our CAD/CAM System software for doing custom circuit board design.

Shipping is specified by and paid by the customer (cost varies with service and destination), and California residents are subject to state sales tax.

As you can see, at these prices this is not a huge money-maker for us, but there is a small profit in it, and we're glad to do it, mostly because it exposes a relatively untapped segment of the market to Douglas Electronics (several of the Handy Board orders have resulted in inquiries about our design software, some of which have matured into software sales), and several Handy Board customers have returned to order other breadboard products from us (our reputation for quality is excellent). It's truly a situation where everybody wins. We make a small margin and get valuable market exposure, while the robotics experimenters get to order small quantities of Fred's very elegant (and well supported) design without having to incur the normal set-up charges, delays, and minimums of a custom manufacturing run.
